One of the telltale signs of brake wear-and-tear is when you hear sounds from the brakes as you are using them. When you hear these sounds, it’s important that you understand what they’re telling you so you can act appropriately. If you ever hear these sounds from the brakes during a drive, here’s what they mean and what you need to do!
When using the brakes, it isn’t uncommon to hear the occasional squeak or squeal, especially when it’s cold. What is uncommon is if you hear these sounds every time you use the brakes. That is a sign of a thin brake pad. The sound originates from metal “hairs” or spring that is installed into the pad. Once the pad reaches a certain thinness, these components expose and begin to gently scrape the brake disc, generating the sound. Don’t worry, your vehicle is fine for the moment, but you will need to schedule a brake pad replacement at your first convenience or risk further damage over time.
If you hear grinding when using the brakes, you’ve waited too long to get service and the pads have completely worn out. This exposes the metal calipers and allows them to squeeze on the brake disc without proper padding. This metal-on-metal contact is awful for the braking system and can cause significant damage over a short amount of time. If you hear this sound, please stop driving your vehicle and visit our shop as soon as possible.
